Music and Memphis…ya cain’t say one without th’ uth’r

Welcome! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed so you won't miss the Blarties (=blog+party) on the weekends. To find out more about our Blarties check out this post, too. Looking forward to seeing you on the weekends!

Having been born very near there in the late 50’s when Elvis and his music set off an explosion of music rooted in blues, gospel, and country that proliferated into the 60’s, 70’s, and beyond, I know. And I KNEW after clicking on the link to allmemphismusic.com left in a comment by Jon Scott on my post about Elvis that I could go back “home” in time to the River City on the mighty muddy Mississippi and go to the Mid-South Fair, the Cotton Carnival, and back to cruisin’ Summer Ave. again because this is IT!!! This is THE SOUND I grew up hearing all around the Memphis area from tot to teen and all in between!

AllMemphisMusic.com will feed you the likes of Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tina Turner, Booker T. & the MGs, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, Roy Orbison, and many more when you fire up your audio player. Think Blues, R&B, Soul, Jazz, Rock…you name it. And they’re adding more and more everyday. I absolutely LOVE this station and hearing Jerry Lee Lewis talk TODAY!

If you were fortunate enough to grow up there, you’ll remember things like The Twin Drive-in on Summer Ave., Lunati Cams on the hot rods that drag raced down Summer Ave., Robilio’s, cruisin’ the Krystal on Summer Ave., the Thursday and Friday night high school football games at stadiums all over the city, Sunday afternoons in the Spring at either Overton Park, Audubon Park, or Shelby Forest, and who knows what else! Oh! Let’s not forget the skating rinks and roller skating to some of this music and feasting at The Food Fare afterwards. It’ll definitely take ya back!

Oh my! Right now I hear a fast talkin’ strong southern accent tellin’ me to go on down to 310 S. Main St. in Memphis…even THAT brings back memories. Whatcha waitin’ on?! Hurry up, click here and git on over there before you miss sumpin’ good!

Home and Garden Decor…Its Come a LONG Way, Baby!

Sponsored Post

How much of the interior decor, furniture, and lawn and garden ornaments from the 50’s and 60’s do you remember? You know, like pink and black tile in the bathroom, pink flamingos stickin’ up on the lawn, console stereos, and those chrome kitchen table and chair sets. What about those avocado green and harvest gold refrigerators, stoves, sinks, and, of course, sculptured carpet in the same colors from the 70’s? (Excuse me while I gag and s-s-s-hhh-i-i-i-vvv-e-e-e-rrrrrr…I never have taken to the harvest gold and avocado green colors.)

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the pink and black tile in the bathroom because it’s STILL in the home of one of my older family members. Believe it or not, it’s still in tip top condition. Come to think of it, this family member still has one of those console stereos and green, sculptured carpet in the living room, too. Kinda makes it easy to fall back a few years in time and relive my childhood when I visit this family member’s home.

If you’re longing to literally relive your childhood complete with chrome kitchen table and chairs and pink flamingos they’re still available at Amazon.com. BUT, there’s ONLY ONE of The Original Don Featherstone Lawn Flamingo Ornament in Original Packaging! left so you better hurry and have a sizable roll of cash or a good chunk of available credit on your credit card if you absolutely MUST have the original!

One of my fondest memories is getting up at the crack of dawn at my Grandmother’s and gathering around the red and white formica topped and chrome plated kitchen table with other siblings and cousins also visiting to sip our kids version of coffee from a saucer. Amazon.com has a 7pc White & Chrome Retro Oval Table & Rose Chairs Set similar to my Grandmother’s, but hers had a red and white swirly design on the tabletop.

I’d have to say home and garden design and decor has come a LONG way, wouldn’t you? It’s fun to be able to visit the homes of those that seem to stand still in time, but I don’t think I’ll be decorating my kitchen like Rachel Ray’s retro stage kitchen anytime soon. Please tell me you don’t want harvest gold or avocado green stuff in your house.

Route 66 Cyber Vacation

Enjoy a Route 66 cyber vacation today. Found this while searching for some things to do besides mow the lawn, clean out closets, wash the trucks, and all those other things that spell w-o-r-k while on vacation next week. Interesting history!
