Hippity Hops, Pogo Sticks, home cooked meals, and fresh lemonade stands; things I grew up with. No cable TV, X Boxes, microwavable dinners, or fast food. What happened to “get outside and play” and make a “happy plate” (clean your plate), not get a Happy Meal?
It’s no wonder. The sedimentary lifestyle of todays generation spends much of their time indoors, captive of the idiot tube playing video games and watching 50+ TV channels advertising “order your Pizza online”. I remember four TV channels, Captain Kangaroo, riding bikes and climbing the neighbors’ trees to get their pears and apples. Be inside before dark.
As teens their social life consists of three-way calling, iPhones, MySpace, and drive-thru windows. Most of them have never heard of 8-track tapes. “Our Gang” would cruise thru town with T-Tops out listening to Skynyrd, load up the car and head to the drive-in theatre. We thought we were all that and a bag of chips. I could go on and on.

Having been born very near there in the late 50’s when Elvis and his music set off an explosion of music rooted in blues, gospel, and country that proliferated into the 60’s, 70’s, and beyond, I know. And I KNEW after clicking on the link to allmemphismusic.com left in a comment by Jon Scott on my post about Elvis that I could go back “home” in time to the River City on the mighty muddy Mississippi and go to the Mid-South Fair, the Cotton Carnival, and back to cruisin’ Summer Ave. again because this is IT!!! This is THE SOUND I grew up hearing all around the Memphis area from tot to teen and all in between!
AllMemphisMusic.com will feed you the likes of Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tina Turner, Booker T. & the MGs, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, Roy Orbison, and many more when you fire up your audio player. Think Blues, R&B, Soul, Jazz, Rock…you name it. And they’re adding more and more everyday. I absolutely LOVE this station and hearing Jerry Lee Lewis talk TODAY!
If you were fortunate enough to grow up there, you’ll remember things like The Twin Drive-in on Summer Ave., Lunati Cams on the hot rods that drag raced down Summer Ave., Robilio’s, cruisin’ the Krystal on Summer Ave., the Thursday and Friday night high school football games at stadiums all over the city, Sunday afternoons in the Spring at either Overton Park, Audubon Park, or Shelby Forest, and who knows what else! Oh! Let’s not forget the skating rinks and roller skating to some of this music and feasting at The Food Fare afterwards. It’ll definitely take ya back!
Oh my! Right now I hear a fast talkin’ strong southern accent tellin’ me to go on down to 310 S. Main St. in Memphis…even THAT brings back memories. Whatcha waitin’ on?! Hurry up, click here and git on over there before you miss sumpin’ good!
…where were you when you heard the news about Elvis Presley?
I was driving north on Hwy 54 going into Jefferson City, MO with my baby girl in the seat next to me when I heard the news that Elvis had passed away. I’ll never forget it. Even I, who as a little girl grew tired and weary of sitting in front of the musical note gates of Graceland with my Mom and brothers, and who turned down a date to one of his 1974 Memphis concerts because I didn’t want to sit next to my ex-boyfriend and his new girl, broke down and cried.
These are for those of you who would’ve said, “Ta HELL with the ex-boyfriend!!!” and went to the concert anyway. Enjoy!
I can’t say something about Elvis without mentioning the WHOLE Memphis music scene and its history during his time. What a FANTABULOUS time and place to have grown up!
Elvis: Midnight in Vegas at the FedExForum in Memphis tonight may be about as close as you can get to the real thing these days.
I debated about including these, but, we-e-l-l-l-l, ok.
From the looks of this one, maybe I’ll get another chance to see a concert…
Hmmm….nah, this ain’t the dude MY Mama was watchin’ for at the gates, but nice try.
