You're welcome, Bev, and good for you regarding your Mother. You're absolutely right about knowledge being power and that's my hope with this post...to hopefully empower others to be able to deal with this issue somehow before they are stung by it unexpectedly.

Angela,

Some company pulled this stunt with my 85-year-old incapacitated mother! She apparently had a credit card debt that was purchased by a collection agency. They ended up tracking me down and I told them when they paid her nursing home bill, then they could come back and talk to me. Otherwise, my name is Beverly---not Lillian.

Sadly, the average person is totally unaware of how their debts can come back to haunt them and the fact that they're being taken advantage of. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! Thanks for posting this and the "education."

Your welcome, Debbie! Good for you! The more the news is spread about how we can stay on top of these issues, the better off more people will be financially.

Thanks for this post Angela! I read through 'Prisoners of Debt', and left a comment at Business Week.
You have inspired me to re-open a similar topic in my own blog!

Cheers mate

[...] Check it out! While looking through the blogosphere we stumbled on an interesting post today. Here’s a quick excerpt Although I’ve recently blogged about some things that I consider gloomy, I don’t like to do so, but some things just need to be brought to the attention of others at times. This morning I feel compelled to share a couple of articles I read in two different issues of my print edition of Businessweek that I think are rather alarming for the uninsured. The first article I want to highlight, titled Fresh Pain for the Uninsured, is about how some medical facilities are now handing over the account [...]
