So, what year, make, and model were those nostalgic old cars?

Remember the two cars in the Name That Boomer Memory post earlier this week? Well, although quite a few cruised in to hang out on Boomer Memory Lane, nobody responded to name the two cars. The first car is a 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria. The second car is a 1964 Ford Galaxie, but ours was a 4 door rather than a 2 door.

A friend of mine in high school (early 70’s) had a souped up 1955 Chevy Nomad with a 4-in-the-floor that was painted fire engine red. He worked as a sales clerk in a department store to earn the money to restore his prized and coveted car. He did all the restoration himself while attending school, participating in sports, and working, and he did a great job of restoring it, I might add.

I almost had the pleasure of driving it one day. Unfortunately, I had to have the seat all the way up in this one, too, in order to reach the accelerator, brake, and clutch. With the seat all the way up, I wasn’t able to shift through all the gears. Dang! How disappointing! That car was s-o-o-o-o-o-o cool with it’s low but loud rumble, too.

A lot of my friends had some really fun cars and hot rods during my high school years. I’ll save all that info for the future, though. Maybe I’ll set aside a day a week or a day or two a month to feature some of the classic cars we enjoyed “back in the day”.

Whadya think? Got any cars or car stories you’d like to share?

  1. U asked … so here ’tis: THE DUMBEST CAR STORY IN RELIC HISTORY:

I was just a kid when Daddy gave me the keys to my first car … a ‘65 Ford Galaxy whose paint job, I swear, was done by incontinent birds!
Anyway, I knew more about brain surgery than I did about cars. As I admired most of the car (minus paint job), my brothers (who knew my ignorance and snickered at it) put three quarts of oil and the water hose beside it and said, “Now, you know where to put it, right?”
I was tempted … yes, I was TEMPTED. But they were my BROTHERS, so I remained virtuous.
They went back into the house, as I lifted the hood, and checked the innards.
How dense WAS I? Follow me on this, now …
I figured, “Hmmmm … I know that Daddy keeps the CEILING fan oiled so it won’t seize up, soooo THAT fan needs …” And three quarts of oil went into the radiator.
“An’ … an’, of course, the MOTOR’S gonna run hot, and when it DOES, it’s gonna need WATER, sooooo …” I stuck the water hose in the crankcase and turned the sucker on full-speed!
THEN, after putting a cap on this, a top on THAT and put the hood down …
I started the car up … and took off for my first spin down Morrow Avenue.
Five blocks down the road, I heard a “RRRRRRRUMP!” and the car jerked a few times, almost tearing up my RRRRRRRUMP! and it died on me then and there (I mean, the car … not my RRRRRUMP!). I got out, lifted up the hood, and there …
    right under my hood …
was a SWAMP … a mix of oil, water, and I SWEAR a TREE frog or two ….

Now, that was YEARS ago, and I’ve learned what goes WHERE. Also I’ve learned how things work in a car. But I know NOW what FORD actually means:

    Found On Road, Dead.

That’s my story. PLEASE forgive me, as the GMC Maker has …

    THE RELIC

  2. Ohhhh, if my Daddy read that…his feathers would be ruffled fer sure. LOL! First On Race Day, he’d argue.

Me…now? Dodge 4×4’s Rams. Two of ‘em…LOVE ‘em! The newest one even came equipped with a Jake Brake much to our surprise. Then there’s DH’s go-cart…the Hyandai Elantra. Gives me the hibby jibbies to be near 18-wheelers in that lil fiber-glass container (they ain’t even tin cans any more)!

  3. I was raised in a Spanish-speaking country and the one car that DID NOT do well at all was the Chevy Nova. You see “No Va” in Spanish means “It does not go.” Needles to say, no one wanted a car that “did not go.” LOL!

  5. Back in ‘59, I was fortunate enough to afford a brand new El Camino 350ci. Whew! That car was a beauty!

  6. Aww, Aaron, interesting you bring up the El Camino. It crossed my mind when I wrote this post. Got a pic of yours? Would love to see it! Have to wonder, what the thoughts were that led to the design of the El Camino?

  7. One of my fondest memories, way back in 1970 was holidaying in a VW Variant, and towing a van. The old variant with its air cooled motor just never gave up. This was before the days when everyone had AC. Just imagine the kids of today being made to travel ina car without AC, DVD etc

  8. Hi Paint Pro! Thanks for stopping by! VW Variant…hmmm, will have to Google that as I’ve never heard of them.

Yes, I can imagine them having to do without A/C…LOL!
