What Song Was #1 When You…
Welcome! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed so you won't miss the Blarties (=blog+party) on the weekends. To find out more about our Blarties check out this post, too. Looking forward to seeing you on the weekends!
UPDATE - I’ve added my Summer of Love favorites sponsored playlist from iTunes at the bottom of this post.
How about we stir up the memory banks a little on hump day by finding the #1 song corresponding with the following events in your life. You can find the answers to the following questions at Josh Hosler’s website on his Number One Song on Any Date in History page.
Share it with us in a comment. What memories do the songs evoke for you? What do you think/feel about it now? (Just keep it family friendly, ‘k? K.
) Yea, I’m thinking the therapy will do us all some good.
I’ll start off…
What was the #1 song when:
- You were born? - Jailhouse Rock/Treat Me Nice by Elvis Presley - Reminds me of my Mom and her friends.
- You started 1st grade/Kindergarten? - My Boyfriend’s Back by The Angels Although this was when I began 1st grade it reminds me more of a silly girlfriend/boyfriend feud with some other kids during my 3rd grade year.
- You entered Jr. High? - Honky Tonk Women by The Rolling Stones - Hehehe…Reminds me of my uncles and where they hung out.
- You entered Sr. High? - Alone Again (Naturally) by Gilbert O’Sullivan - This reminds me of having to attend a different school than the one some of my friends were assigned to. We attended the same Jr. High, but the school district line split our Jr. High into two different Sr. High schools. The one I attended seemed HUGE to me, too. Life went on, but I wasn’t so sure it would at that time.
- You got your license and your first car (LOVE that one!!!)? - Show and Tell by Al Wilson - Livin’ it up in the new family car which was a blue and white ‘73 Maverick Grabber with a 302 V8 in it. Daddy jacked up the rear and put glass packs and spoked wheel covers on it. WOOHOO! Fun!!! Cruisin’ the local drag with all my friends…burnin’ rubber and once getting a lecture from an officer about how much that rubber cost my Daddy. Doin’ a 360 when the light turned red while drag racing once. Phew! Lived to tell it and no cops around that time.
- You went on your first date? - Truthfully, I can’t pinpoint a “first” date. I always stayed with the crowd.
- You had your first kiss? - I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash LOL! Gotta see the humor in THAT one! But, yes, I could’ve sworn I was seeing clearly at the moment.
- You attended your senior prom? - My senior class didn’t get to have a prom, but Foot Loose by Kevin Loggins always reminds of this. I graduated from a private school affiliated with a local church.
- You graduated from high school? - Thank God I’m a Country Boy by John Denver Now THAT reminds me of my country boy cousins trying to keep up with my Maverick in their fastback Mustangs. Guess who won.
And your songs and memories are…?

Mine was weird: 1958 … “Purple People Eater.” I have heard the song even though it was probably as an adult!

I remember that song! It reminds me of all the boogie man/horror movies like the one about the gigantic spider.
There was a local show aired weekly in Memphis titled Fantastic Features hosted by Sivad (his real name of Davis spelled backwards and pronounced Sah-vodd) on Saturday evenings. Watched it every week.

Your #8 - Great song!
Your #9 - Although I do like the song, it can never hold my attention for the full length of the song.

Angela,
I’m just going to “cheat” on this quiz a bit because I’m not a boomer, but my parents are.
My dad had I want to say a ‘67 corvette in this orangey red color, and pictures of himself with the sideburns and little square-rimmed glasses, striking poses next to it. He has some shots of my mom in her bouffant hairdo, lying out on the hood of the car, too. Then I think the last photo is of my mom standing by the car with guess who in her big ol’ belly (that would be me). The last year he still had it was 1972 and the car was sold before I greeted the world. (Sorry, Dad!)
I know all the lyrics to tons of songs from the ’50s and ’60s because my parents had one of those reel-to-reels that they’d transferred songs onto from their little 45 records. We have a diner near my house that plays doo-wop all the time, and whenever we go in there I can’t help bopping along and singing Kansas City Here I Come, My Boyfriend’s Back, Leader of the Pack, Lonely Teardrops, He’s So Fine and all the oldies but goodies. I actually can kind of fake a lindy because my mom used to drag me into the livingroom to dance with her when I was a kid.
Those are my boomer-by-association memories! Thanks for sharing all the awesome old pics. I love nostalgia. Ever see the Time Life Book Collection - This Fabulous Century? You’d love those.

Dina, you being a lil “Boomette”, shall I say, is similar to my situation of being the kid of a couple who were of the late 50’s era.
Where you enjoy a lot of the 60’s music because of your parents, in the same respect, I enjoy the 50’s music because of my parents. It was almost a requirement in my house to know how to do The Twist and understand what “Cr-a-a-a-ank it up!” meant.
I forgot all about those recording machines! I remember having one of those and thinking it was just the spiffiest thang to be able to record stuff and play it back!
TL Book Collection - This Fabulous Century…I’ll have to check into that. Thanks!
