In the process of going through some old family pictures for the purpose of creating a collage, I came across a couple of pictures of cars of my parent’s from the 60’s and a house in my hometown. I thought it would be fun to publish several of the pictures and play a Boomer’s memories name game. (Click on the thumbnails for a larger view.)
The car in the forefront of this picture was our family car when I was in elementary school in the 60’s. This car was blue and white. Why did I say “family car”?! That sounds as though we had more than one car. Only the rich and famous had more than one car back then! So, can you name the make, model, and year of the car in the forefront of this picture?
The next picture is of the car my Daddy taught me how to drive in during the early 70’s. The steering wheel was wider than me and I had to sit on a pillow to see over the top of it. The seat had to be moved all the way up for me to reach the brake and accelerator, too, which made my poor Daddy have to look over his knees. (Not only did “short people got nobody”, before the energy crisis of the 70’s brought on small economy cars, short people got no cars either.)
Turning corners was a trick in this big ole boat of a car, lemme tell ya! Fortunately it had power steering. (NO! Of course that isn’t me…it’s my little brother.) Daddy made sure I wouldn’t ever get stuck in a situation I couldn’t get myself out of…after learning to drive this car I had to learn to drive his Ford F150 pickup with three-on-the-tree. Can you name the make, model, and year of this car?
The next pic is of the home of a celebrity that was practically my neighbor for 8 years. This home was only 10 minutes from my house. My brothers and I saw the gates graced with musical notes to this home more times than we care to remember. Not because of the home or its owner, but because, depending on the time of the year, it got awful hot or we were so freakin’ cold our teeth chattered ninety-to-nuthin’.
We had to go EVERY TIME our Mom heard through the grapevine that the celebrity was coming home! Back then many people would have given their right arm to sit out there and wait…and wait…and wait. Not us! We wanted to go home to our own house where we would be much more comfortable NOW! Little did we realize at that time, but NEV-v-v-vah did see the dude. Rumor has it there was a back entrance. Can you name this home?

Liberace?

Good shot, Rhea, but not a bullseye. Liberace and this home’s owner were both known to perform live in Las Vegas, though.

Lawrence Welk?

Another good shot, Rhea, but still not a bullseye.
The owner of this home was instrumental in orchestrating a MAJOR impact on the entertainment industry whether he initially set out with the intention of doing so or not, though.

OK, I’m not going to give it away because I think you sent me this person’s name in an email. Am I right? or was it Elvis?

Ummm … lemme see here. This is my 2nd try at commenting on this, so:
Could it be … it looks like … ELVIS’ place? Yeah … ELVIS mansion: final answer!
Incidentally, I’m told Elvis died about a couple years ago. He hadn’t worked since the last episode of MIAMI VICE (YOU figure it out!).

Ding! Ding! Ding! Leslie and Relic!
Now if somebody would come along and tell me what kind of cars those are.
Ohhhhh, Relic, your mention of Miami Vice reminded me of the poster of DJ I used to dream of having over my bed. WHAT was I thinking???!!!
Hmmm…Elvis Pelvis and Miami Vice…have to think about this one seein’s how Miami Vice, the show anyway, came along a roughly 6 or 7 yrs later than Elvis’ departure from this life. Off to see if I can locate a copy of that last episode…

Oh wow! Funny you should mention Peter Tork…I was wondering the other day what ever became of members of The Monkees.
Found Peter\’s site and the petition…it\’s signed, sealed, and delivered with pleasure.

A quickie about the other Monkees (and, yes, I had my “#9 Dream” … in other words — or Joe Tex’s — I Gotcha!):
Micky’s still doin’ solo gigs around the country. Personally, I don’t like the dude, but he STILL cuts a mean “Goin’ Down” (a mix of scatsound and James Brown in a helluva cool next of lyrics! I remember all the words, too!).
Davy, on the other hand, is content with his horses, a few gigs, and tryin’ his hand at occasional TV roles. He’s not into it like he once was. (Think the Tork thing finally got him to wise up!)
Mike Nesmith is a pure genius with a warm but VERY private heart! He’s devoted to his production company and Texas ranch. Rarely does gigs anymore.
Interesting to note that Warren Beatty tried out for the “tambourine” role that Davy got. Also, David Bowie changed HIS name from his given (Jones) in honor of Davy. Annnd (there’s more?!?) Stephen Stills almost got Pete’s role, but, when he was told his teeth were too crooked (really!), he recommended Peter for the “quiet one” of the prefabbers.

Relic, Thanks for the update. I see from Peter’s site at http://www.petertork.com/ that he’ll be in Centralia, IL 09/08/2007. There’s a possibility I could make it to that while visiting family in St. Louie.
Here’s the link to the petition I mentioned earlier for anybody interested in seeing The Monkees inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. http://www.petitiononline.com/Kretch07/petition.html

Well, although quite a few cruised in to hang out on Boomer Memory Lane, nobody responded to name the two cars. The first car is a 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria. The second car is a 1964 Ford Galaxie, but ours was a 4 door rather than a 2 door. […]
