After reading Larry Lehmer’s kind and thoughtful comment on The Passing of the Family History and Memories Torch, I visited his blog, Passing It On. One post in particular, What’s in a name, You decide, grabbed my attention.
Larry wrote about the difference in family history and personal history and how interchangeable they are to some, especially those not as familiar with genealogy terms. As far as he’s concerned they are one and the same. I can’t think of any different labels or just exactly where you would draw the line as far as the difference in family history and personal history.
Questioning the difference reminded me of one of my posts about documenting and preserving your career/employment history which I’m sure your descendants would appreciate. Depending on whether or not any of your descendants followed in your footsteps, I suppose your career history could be considered more of a personal nature.
Imagine your descendants finding such a treasure on a DVD or CD or some other modern version of the old trunk in the attic years from now. Have you ever found career information about any of your ancestors all together in one place or in a manner similar to a career portfolio? How detailed was it? Did it provide unknown information someone in another family may find fascinating about their family history?
