Sun protection for your skin for before, during, & after sun exposure

Welcome! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed so you won't miss the Blarties (=blog+party) on the weekends. To find out more about our Blarties check out this post, too. Looking forward to seeing you on the weekends!

Here in the south it’s that time of year again when we all need to consider using sun protection. Especially if we are fair skinned and tend to burn easily even when we spend just a short period of time outdoors.

To be perfectly honest with you, I prefer not to use sun protection. I do like to tan at least a little. I’m not necessarily a sun worshipper, but I like to soak up just enough rays to have a bit of a healthy summer glow.

However, I do have a grandson that burns very easily that we must protect. I’ve been known to call him “Cottontop”, because this child is so fair-skinned and has hair so light it’s almost white. He has a few very light freckles on the bridge of his nose, but you can hardly even see them.

We’ve been using SPF 30 Sunscreen and After-Sun Replenishing Gel from Mary Kay® on him to protect his skin from the damaging and sometimes painful effects of the sun’s rays on his skin. The SPF 30 Sunscreen is a lightweight, oil-free sunscreen that is waterproof and sweatproof for up to 80 minutes.

The After-Sun Replenishing Gel replenishes vital moisture to his skin which tends to dry out quickly. It soothes areas of his skin that have dried out from being in the sun too long or burned. Both products have been a big relief for him. He’s able to spend more time outdoors with his friends and cousins enjoying the outdoor things kids love to do without the threat of misery from a sunburn later.

You can purchase both of these products seperately or in a set which also includes Lip Protector Sunscreen SPF 15. The Sun Care Gift Set from Mary Kay® comes with a nice bag with a drawstring in which you can store and carry the sun care products. It’s a Limited Edition set so if you would like to have the bag you better purchase soon before it’s sold out.

For those of you that would like to have that healthy glow without having to spend time in the tanning salons or outdoors or are as sensitive to the sun as my grandson, there is the Sun Essentials® Sunless Tanning Lotion also by Mary Kay®. It only takes about 3 daily applications to begin giving your skin a healthy glow.

Once you’ve applied it 3 days in a row, you can then wait several days in between applications to maintain your desired depth of skin color. A couple of tips for even application are to be sure to exfoliate your skin in the shower before applying it. It can be mixed with a lotion to help apply it more evenly in areas such as the elbows, knees, and ankles. Wash the palms of your hands immediately after application to prevent discoloration of your palms.

  4. When I was young I was always getting burned, as I have really fair skin. Someone told my family that using a cotton ball to apply vinegar to a sunburn would cool the burn and prevent peeling. I tried it. While it stank to high heaven, it did keep me from peeling as badly as I had in the past and help to soothe the burning.

  5. Hi Two! Yes, vinegar does work, but you’re definitely right about stinking to high heaven. LOL!
I’ve added it to bath water and soaked in it after getting sunburned. Wonder how the “scent” would mix with the scent of bath crystals, bath oils, or bubble baths? Hmmmm…lethal? ;-)

  8. Hi Angela,

I also like to try to get away without sunscreen if I can as I find it greasy on my skin. The only thing is though that I have to wear my wide brimmed hat (I prefer my cowboy hat for this!). But if Mary Kay is non greasy, and also easy to wash off, then I’ll have to try it!

  9. Yes, I’ve found some of them to be rather greasy feeling, too. If you need an MK Beauty Consultant just drop me a comment here as I am a consultant.

  10. Sun protection is a message that for some people is not getting though. A lot of products available also don’t live up to the promises that the manufactures actually make.

  14. It’s nice to know not everyone is freaked out by the sun. The studies that you don’t hear about the benefits of a certain type of Vitamin D that you can only get from Sun exposer gets swept under the sunscreen companies rug.

I guess it’s harder to profit from sunshine than sunscreen.

  15. I’ve tended to find that the “fake tans” end up with me have brown lines around my elbows and knees. I can’t seem to find any products which this doesn’t happen with.

No we’re coming up to winter, the chance for a natural tan has been and gone and I’d appreciate any feedback from anyone who has tried the Mary Kay product - does it give those brown lines?

  16. Nice article, thanks for the heads up on the Mary Kay sun screen products. I agree I don’t like to stay pasty white all summer long, but at the same time I know that we have to protect our skin these days to avoid other health risks.

  17. I want to protect my fair skin from the sun. I am already using Natural Glow w/ SPF for my face to give me a light tan and protection, but now I want the best sun - protection for my body. It doesn’t need to be a tanning sun screen.

  19. Shade and sun screen are both vitally important to protect against sun overexposure. Very nice article and extremely informative.
